For the last year and a half I’ve worked on a book of writing and photographs called Valid Until Sunset. I’ve carried that title around for years, since encountering it in the parking lot of Haulover, the gay nude beach in Miami, printed on a little slip that you put onto your dashboard (true to the project, those tickets have since changed...) I’ve been taking photographs with my little Fuji instant camera for seven years, and was finally prompted to make this book after my father’s death in late 2021.
The result is an experiment in combining everything I care about— Renaissance painting, gay sex, contemporary art, God, drag queens and cross-country roadtrips—attempting to find a new language for addressing images. It has been an important process for me, as a thinker and human being, and I’m so proud to share it later this fall.
It’s being published by Matthew Leifheit’s remarkable Matte Editions, and designed in a true collaboration with the extraordinary Alison Hahn, of Hahn Studio Toronto.
And, it can be PRE-ORDERED right now!
There are two versions— the original (for $50) and a *special edition* (for $200) that comes with a polaroid mounted in the back cover. Both are hardcover and wrapped in hot pink silk, ooh-la-la!
If you want this book please pre-order it!
The launch will be in early November with an event announced soon, but in the meantime I’m happy that an excerpt of Valid Until Sunset is included in the new issue Border Crossings magazine (#162) as part of their “painting issue." I’m a such a fan of what they do and it’s a real honor. —big thank you to the incomparable Meeka Walsh! (In case you missed it, Meeka and I had a conversation about her wonderful collection Malleable Forms earlier this year for the MOMUS podcast.)
I am also excited to be doing a reading of my science fiction short story “For All We Know” to inaugurate the new Hauser & Wirth Amphitheater in Chelsea. The performance will include visuals by Leigha Mason and special vocals by the one and only Glasser!
“For All We Know” — 30th September 2023, 5pm, 443 W 18th St. New York, NY.
It’s free but you have to register here!
AND NOW….it is my great pleasure… to announce September’s Angel-of-the-Month:
